THE TERRY FOX RESEARCH INSTITUTE presents...
A Series of Pan-Canadian Dialogues on
Cancer: Let's Get Personal
"Patient-Centred Care in a Personalized Treatment World"

Commencing in April 2010, the Terry Fox Research Institute (TFRI) will launch a Series of Pan-Canadian dialogues on Patient-Centred Care in a Personalized Treatment World to provide Canadians from coast to coast with the opportunity to discuss regional issues related to cancer care and research. The first dialogue will be held in St. John's, Newfoundland on Monday, April 12, 2010. The event coincides with the launch to the TFRI Atlantic Node and the 30th Anniversary of the Terry Fox Marathon of Hope.
We are entering an era in cancer care and research where significant and transformational advances in science and technology will, over the next few years, provide us with new treatments, tests and methods to detect, diagnose and treat cancer earlier and individually. But are patients, physicians and health care policy makers ready for this transformation? And are they speaking the same language when they talk about patient-centred care and personalized treatment?
Three perspectives - the views of the patient, the physician and the health care policy maker/economist - will be discussed at each dialogue and TFRI will work with regional health care and research partners and professionals to together identify core issues and key speakers/presenters for an engaging and informative dialogue. We will also discuss how together we can initiate change within the health care system to ensure that these new advances are more rapidly available to cancer patients.
With the poorest outcomes in cancer in Canada, beginning our dialogue series in Atlantic Canada will enable us to focus special attention on the needs of Atlantic Canadians and begin today the work of ensuring that citizens here will be able to benefit from the best science, medicine and health care available to improve outcomes for cancer patients.
Atlantic Region Core Issues
- Cancer and Population Health
- Cancer Care and the Health System
- The Science Behind Cancer Care
We hope to raise the level of awareness and understanding among all dialogue participants - researchers, patients, survivors, physicians, nurses, family members , caregivers, economists, biologists, oncologists, surgeons dietitians, therapists -- of the key issues involved in cancer care and research today and to discover and formulate together a shared view of the future that translates into better cancer outcomes for Atlantic Canadians.
