2017 Annual Scientific Meeting: "Celebrating Our 10th Anniversary"

TFRI organizes an Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) as an opportunity for the whole community of Terry Fox-funded researchers to get together to share ideas and to discuss their research. The meeting is by invitation only. Our 8th ASM will take place in Vancouver, BC on Saturday, Nov. 4 and the theme will be "Celebrating TFRI's 10th Anniversary."

Our meeting this year will be a one-day session consisting of three plenary sessions and a rapid-fire breakout session for trainees. We will conclude with a celebratory dinner for meeting registrants and special guests.

This year, TFRI is encouraging all funded investigators and trainees to register for the Canadian Cancer Research Conference and to present their research. To further encourage participation of our trainees, please see the section below on Important Information for Trainees.

Important Information for Trainees

There are many meeting changes this year which apply to our trainees, so we ask that you please read the following information carefully. There is a special process this year for trainees planning to attend our ASM as we will only be holding a rapid-fire session. Our rapid-fire session will enable trainees to promote their poster being presented at the CCRC meeting.

Trainees attending the TFRI meeting must be on the pre-registration list provided to TFRI by their program/project. To be eligible to attend the TFRI meeting, ASM trainees must first submit their abstract to the CCRC (see below).

TFRI Travel Awards and CCRC Early Bird Registration Fees

To encourage TFRI trainee participation at both our ASM and the CCRC, we advise that those TFRI -funded trainees who BOTH

  1. Give a rapid-fire presentation at the TFRI ASM; AND
  2. Are chosen to present a poster at the CCRC

will be awarded a TFRI Travel Grant AND TFRI will also pay their CCRC Early-Bird Registration ($225)

NOTE: CCRC Early-Bird registration closes on Thursday, Sept. 7.  TFRI will not pay any trainee CCRC registration fees after this date.

Abstract Submissions to CCRC Meeting

To be eligible to attend the TFRI meeting, ASM trainees must first submit their abstract to the CCRC.

Deadline for CCRC abstracts:  Tuesday, June 27th (visit http://conference.ccra-acrc.ca/abstracts/)

PLEASE NOTE: Acceptance of the abstract to the CCRC meeting also constitutes approval to present a rapid-fire talk at the TFRI ASM. Each trainee attending the TFRI ASM is required to make a rapid-fire presentation.

CCRC is targeting Tuesday, August 1 to advise of acceptance of poster presentations. TFRI will also advise those accepted trainees to register for the TFRI ASM.

Rapid-Fire Talk Instructions

This year TFRI will hold rapid-fire talks only (no poster sessions) and will follow the process used at the TFRI Ontario Node Research Day (December 2016).  Each presenter will have four minutes to present using the following ‘ground rules’.

  • ONE Powerpoint-formatted slide only that summarizes the abstract is to be presented. (Use 4:3 slide formatting only).
  • Presenters will not have a remote mouse or control over animations so please consider this when preparing the slide.
  • There will be a timer and a moderator to ensure that everything is kept to time
  • This presentation is really an advertisement for your CCRC poster.
  • There are many great examples of "3-Minute Thesis" presentations on You Tube; be sure to view a few to get a sense of how it is done effectively.
  • It is highly recommended to design the slide like the graphical abstracts of Cell Press; take a look at these to see how they are presented.
  • Consider this presentation like giving an "elevator pitch".  See Roberta Kwok’s article at http://www.nature.com/naturejobs/science/articles/10.1038/nj7435-137a
  • Essentially you want to convey WHY you did your study, HOW it was done, WHAT were the most important findings, and then conclude again with WHY this is important.
  • Your slide must be emailed to Katelyn Verstraten (kverstraten@tfri.ca) by Wednesday,  Oct. 25

All presentations must use the TFRI Slide Format: PowerPoint Template
