Alberta Node

Following extensive consultations with its researchers, we have chosen as our strategic priorities to focus on one or more of the following areas:
  • Personalized medicine and the use of biomarkers
  • Imaging tumoursfrom outside the body, non-invasively
  • New clinical approaches involving insights into solid tumour biology
  • Studies of the pathways and kinetics involved in metabolism of cancer drugs
  • Metabolomics in cancer.

DR CAROL E. CASS
DR. CAROL E. CASS
Dr. Carol Cass is currently the scientific director research for Alberta Health Services - Cancer Care. In 1996, she left her position as Terry Fox cancer research scientist in the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Alberta to become the founding chair of the Department of Oncology at the University of Alberta, a position that she held until 2007.

She also served (2002-2010) as the director of the Cross Cancer Institute, the tertiary cancer centre for Edmonton and northern Alberta. She is now professor emeritus in the Department of Oncology and adjunct professor in the Department of Biochemistry at the UofA.

Dr. Cass received her B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees at the University of Oklahoma and her PhD at the University of California at Berkeley. Her research concentrations have focused on nucleoside transporter proteins and their relationship with nucleoside drugs. Her work has increased understanding of the mechanisms of nucleoside transport and movement across cell membranes, which has translated into better use of nucleoside drugs in cancer treatments.
