Positions Description

The Terry Fox Research Institute (TFRI) www.tfri.ca is a charitable organization supporting research focused on improving cancer research outcomes for the benefit of patients everywhere in partnership with Canadian cancer centres and universities. Together with the Canadian Government and our other research and funding partners, there are matching investments of up to $300 million over five years to create a transformation of cancer research in Canada by bringing together leading cancer research and treatment organizations across the country and empowering them under the framework of the Marathon of Hope Cancer Centres Network (the ‘Network’) www.marathonofhopecancercentres.ca . Summary of Responsibilities

Reporting to the Executive Director and the Senior Program Managers, the Project Managers work as part of the team administering the research initiatives of the Marathon of Hope Cancer Centres Network (the ‘Network’).  They are involved in co-ordinating activities and performance against goals and milestones, and in promoting collaboration between the distributed research teams and working groups that make up the Network.

Scope and Complexity

The Project Managers for the Network are key members of the TFRI team to support the Network’s cancer programs.  One position is available in Vancouver and the other is available in Montreal.  The responsibilities include co-ordination of pan-Canadian activities in liaison with program managers and researchers at each of the Network’s designated cancer centres.  They assist the designated centres in the procurement of sequencing supplies, and work closely with the centres’ program managers and research staff to deliver progress updates and reporting as required by funding sponsors of the Network’s research on a timely basis.  Liaison with researchers and personnel at institutions across the Network requires understanding, tact and diplomacy, and an understanding of TFRI's research policies and procedures.

Key Duties and Accountabilities

 

  • Maintain Network level goals, milestones and deliverables for the Network and its various initiatives
  • Liaise with program managers and recipient institutions to administer the processes for written scientific reporting, and to keep up to date research data on those projects on the Institute’s TFRI research databases, overall ensuring  information is current on internal and externally-facing research databases
  • Contribute to the effective operations of the Network working groups
  • Aid in coordinating the ordering of Illumina genome sequencing reagents working with the Network’s Genome Centres as defined in workplans, and trouble shooting as required
  • Advise program managers of Network policies and relevant TFRI research administration policy
  • Prepare reports required by Health Canada on Network activities
  • Prepare documentation for approval by TFRI, and work with grantees to administer post-award deliverables to ensure that scientific reports, updates and review meetings are planned and completed on-time and on-budget
  • Participate in planning, organization, and attendance at various scientific meetings.

Qualifications

 

  • Level of education, training and experience equivalent to a degree in a scientific or technology subject, with relevant experience in a research-related environment
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Excellent organizational skills including the ability to prioritize work-load in order to meet deadlines
  • Strong computer skills including experience using standard office applications (Office 365), web-based applications (Sharepoint) and database applications (mostly MS-SQL) and their administration
  • Ability to work as a team member when under time constraints
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the job, including occasional travel within Canada
  • Working knowledge of French is an asset
