2019 Terry Fox Run Challenge: TFRI research teams show immense support, raise over $80k for research

TFRI-funded researchers showed up in full force for the 39th annual Terry Fox Run, adding a splash of purple to run sites across the country and raising a whopping $79,143.69 (so far!) for cancer research. (UPDATE 15/10/2019: $90,300)

“It was great to see so many members of our research community come together to raise money for cancer research,” said Dr. Victor Ling, TFRI President and Scientific Director. "Although we are closing this year's challenge, we continue to accept donations and hope to raise even more money for cancer research."

In total, a record-breaking 33 TFRI teams participated in the Terry Fox Challenge, the friendly competition which pits research teams against each other to see which can raise the most funds. For the second year in a row, the Vancouver Prostate Centre team won the challenge, raising over $25,800 for cancer research. Second place went to the Canadian Oncolytic Virus Consortium (COVCo) team, which raised $15,210, and third went to the TFRI HQ team ($5825). A notable mention also goes out to Montreal Cancer Consortium, which participated in the run for the first time and raised over $5k for cancer research.

Notable individual fundraisers this year included Dr. Peter Black (Vancouver Prostate Centre), who raised an incredible $17,815, Dr. Rebecca Auer (COVCo) who raised $10,600.

Dr. Ling was thrilled by the strong turnout and expressed his thanks to everyone who helped to make this year's team challenge and fundraising efforts so successful.

The final numbers raised this year through the annual national run are not yet known. These numbers will be released by The Terry Fox Foundation at a later date.

Below is a summary list of the TFRI teams that participated in the run and team challenge (according to online records):
